General Rules

* All routines shall start from a stationary position. The timing of the routine will start with any action after the

music starts.

* Skaters in some events are permitted to perform any maneuvers out of a lower test level (no additional maneuvers are allowed in Jump and Spin or Solo Compulsory).

* If the wrong music is played and the skater stops and notifies the referee within the first 20 seconds, the skater

may re‐skate the program.

* The designated referee will decide the action on any mishap or unforeseen difficulty. An untied skate or forgotten

program falls under the referee’s jurisdiction.

* The Chief Referee has the right to refuse entries or assess a penalty to teams or arenas not supplying an

adequate number of judges.

* No coaching is allowed during interpretive or stroking events.

Duration

For all ISI competition events:

All Events with “Against the

2 or more entries Book” Events

Correct duration time 7.0 8.0

(Within the 10-second leeway)

If skating is timed 11-14 6.5 7.5

seconds over prescribed time

If skating is timed 15-plus 6.0 7.0

Seconds over prescribed time

Reminders: Duration timing begins with any action after the music starts and ends when the skater stops – not necessarily when the music ends. Judging stops at 10 seconds over the prescribed program time.

* There is no penalty for skating under the prescribed time

See Competition Event Chart of the current ISI Handbook for events and durations based on event level.

All competition rules will be in accordance with the current ISI Handbook in effect at the time of the competition. Should anything in the below summary rules not be clear, the current ISI official publications will govern the events.

The “headbanger spin” is an illegal maneuver in all ISI events.

Events

Family Friendly Programs – Costumes, props themes, song lyrics, and choreography for all ISI competition programs should be family friendly and suitable for viewing by skaters of all ages. Family-friendly implies that the content or experience is free from explicit or inappropriate material. Program content should prioritize values such as safety (non-violence), inclusivity, and entertainment that all ages can share and enjoy.

Tot‐Delta Program Rules

* Skaters will execute all compulsory moves listed in the ISI Handbook for their level in a one

minute program WITH MUSIC of their choice. Skaters in PreAlpha thru Delta must add ONLY one additional maneuver

from Freestyle 1 to their program. In Delta the skater has a ‘choice‐of‐one’ maneuver listed in the Handbook. Only the one

selected maneuver should be performed. In case of misinterpretation and the Delta skater executes both ‘choice‐of‐one’

elements, only the first of these performed will be graded.

Freestyle 1‐10 Program Rules

* Freestyle 1‐10 skaters are not permitted to perform a maneuver from a higher test. * The penalty for doing an illegal additional maneuver will be a score of 2.0 for “Extra Content”.

* Freestyle 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9 skaters require a mandatory dance step sequence for the respective level to be

performed according to the most current ISI Handbook.

* Skaters will be limited to three attempts per required maneuver during programs, and as always, the best attempt will be judged. If the skater attempts the maneuver a fourth time, it will not be judged.

* For Freestyle levels 3, 6, 7, and 8 certain maneuvers are listed in the Handbook as ‘choice‐of‐one’, in the event the

skater misinterprets and performs both optional maneuvers, only the first such ‘choice‐of‐one’ maneuver will be graded.

* The backward edges required in Freestyle 1 must be performed consecutively:

Outside-outside, then inside – inside or inside – inside, then outside – outside.

* Uncaptured spins are not allowed if they include a spin position from a higher level than the skater’s current level.

* Skater must have passed the specific FS# test in order to compete in that event. There is no skating up in the

traditional track FS program events.

* Freestyle 4 & 5 Spins – The sit spin (FS4) and camel spin (FS5) must be performed on a backward inside edge after entry. Changes of edge are allowed on spin variations after the basic spin requirements have been performed. * Freestyle 5 Dance Step – A Chasse step is added before the LFO bracket turn. * Edges in Delta, Freestyle 1, Freestyle Synchro, Team Compulsories If the required edges/seing rolls are not performed consecutively, the skater will receive a bottom of the point range score of 7.0 or 7.5 if skating against the book.

Skaters who compete in FS 1 – 10 programs can also sign up for the Open Freestyle events at the corresponding level.

Open Freestyle Program Rules

* For the Open Freestyle competition events, there are NO REQUIRED MANEUVERS in an Open Freestyle

Competition program. Emphasis is on a well-balanced program containing jumps, spins, footwork and connecting moves.

Event judging criteria: correctness, variety of moves, music interpretation, choreography and pattern, posture,

presentation, duration and general overall . Skaters can now perform any spin at any level. The current jump limitations remain in effect for the Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels. The Open Freestyle test maneuver choices remain the same. There are maneuver limitations.

Event Levels of Skaters Jump Limitations Duration

  • The penalty for not following maneuver limitations will be the grade of 2.0 under Correctness of Jumps

Solo Compulsory Tot through FS 10 Rules

* There is NO music for Compulsory Programs. The 3 below listed pre-selected maneuvers applicable to each level

are to be performed ONE time in a pre‐choreographed program with a minimum amount of connecting maneuvers.

Additional maneuvers such as jumps, spins, or gliding maneuvers from a test level or uncaptured moves, are not allowed,

such as toe taps, tap toes, lunges, bunny hops, pivots, etc. After skater has reached starting position on the ice, the

announcer will say “Skater, you may begin.”

**Only the 3 required maneuvers can be performed, along with 3 turns, mohawks, crossovers, and arm movements with no additional required maneuvers or uncaptured moves. Only the first attempt at each maneuver will be scored. If a required maneuver is attempted more than once, the first attempt is scored, and the skater will be given a score of 2.0 under Penalty by Judge 1 (Referee) only.

Skaters who have only passed the Open FS tests and who enter Compulsory must compete in the following:

Compulsory Event Levels:

Skaters who have only passed the Bronze Open FS test must compete in Compulsory FS 3, skaters who have passed the Silver Open FS test must compete in Compulsory FS 5, skaters who have passed the Gold Open FS test must compete in Compulsory FS 7, while skaters who have passed the Platinum Open FS test may choose to compete in Compulsory FS 8, FS 9 or FS 10 (circle level on the registration form).

The opposite jump in FS 7, 9, and 10 and the opposite spin in FS 9 must be performed in both directions. (Also applies to the Team Compulsory Event)

Stroking (Pre-Alpha – Freestyle 3)

* Skaters will be grouped by age and test levels.

* Skaters will be asked to perform as a group, forward stroking in both directions to music of different tempos

selected by the host rink. Forward crossovers are required on the end pattern and will be judged. This event focuses on cleanness of edges, rhythm, posture, flex skating knee – flow (lilt), proper push off (no toe picks) and extension of free leg. * There will be NO warm‐up for stroking events. * Coaches may not assist their skaters during the event.

Footwork (Bronze - Platinum)

* Skaters are grouped together by age and ability level, and perform to music a program containing a footwork

sequence of their own design. The program should contain original footwork sequences. Emphasis should be given to clean edges and turns: the presentation should not resemble a Freestyle program. They must also be different from the suggested dance step sequences found in the Appendix of the ISI Handbook.

* One half rotation jumps and spins of less then 3 revolutions are permitted. (Note: ½ loop is a full rotation jump).

See chart in the ISI Handbook for limitations on permitted maneuvers for each test level.

  • ½ Loop Stop

The new name is: ½ Loop Stop – a ½ Loop Jump that lands and stops on both feet (toe picks) without gliding on the landing.

Interpretive (Pre-Alpha through Platinum)

* In this event, the skater interprets a piece of music which is heard for the first time just prior to the competition.

Some groups may be given a prop to use in their routine. The emphasis of this event is on the skater’s ability to choreograph and skate to music they have heard only three times. The emphasis is not on the difficulty of the maneuvers performed. No outside instruction is permitted from coaches, the audience or other skaters during this event. * See chart in the ISI Handbook for limitations on permitted maneuvers for each test level. * Skaters in Pre-Alpha through Delta will be split into two judging panels so 2 skaters can perform at the same time. The ice will be split in half. Each panel will judge one skater. Skaters will use either the zamboni end of the ice or the west end. Cones will be used to divide the ice.

Spotlight Events: Tot-Delta, Bronze (FS 1-3), Silver (FS 4-5), Gold (FS 6-7) & Platinum (FS 8-10)

* Skaters are not permitted to exit the ice during a performance.

* Props must fit through a 35-inch-wide door. Skaters can have assistance at the ice door.

* Duration Clarification: Timing starts with any action after the music starts (even if the feet are not moving).

Other Notes regarding Spotlight Events

Note: Skaters may sign up for, and perform different programs in more than one spotlight event in different

categories (e.g., a skater may enter and perform different programs for dramatic spotlight and character spotlight, etc), but should recognize that they may not have very long between spotlight events. We will try and allow for 10 – 15 minutes for a skater competing in more than one spotlight event but no guarantees are made. No refunds will be issued.

* Solo Events: Skaters are judged on costume and prop, music and choreography, judges’ appeal, originality and duration. Spotlight levels may be grouped by the Competition Director in categories: * Light Entertainment: To entertain in a refreshing light‐hearted vaudeville fashion using music, costumes, props (optional), comedy, dance and skating moves. * Character Solo: Skaters portray a famous, easily identifiable character through the use of music, costume, props (optional) and the skater’s actions. Examples: Pink Panther, Superman, Mickey Mouse, Annie, Daffy Duck. * Dramatic Spotlight: An artistic theatrical performance by individual skaters that evokes an emotional response from the judges and audience. The skater’s interpretation should create a mood that is enhanced by the style, creativity, costuming and props(optional). The overall impression at the conclusion of the performance should be that it was a dramatic performance, not light‐hearted, as in the light entertainment category. * Couples Spotlight Event : Two skaters together perform a routine that is entertaining, emotional or a portrayal of characters using costume and props (optional). If partners from two different category levels want to compete together, they must be prepared to follow the maneuver limitations of the higher test level skater category. List your partner’s name on the registration form in the line by Spotlight Couples on the team entry form. Please note: Skaters may enter only 1 Couples Spotlight Event! See chart in the ISI Handbook for limitations on permitted maneuvers for Solo and Couples Spotlight events.

Skaters cannot be given off-ice assistance or participation during their Couples program.

Rhythmic Skating: Bronze – Platinum

Rhythmic skating events will be offered for Skaters in FS 1 – 10. This entertaining routine requires the use of one of the hand props listed below and music of the skater’s choice. The program should contain elements that employ the use of these props throughout the program. The skater must maintain control of their prop at all times. Spotlight entrance and exit rules apply. Props must be listed on the entry form as groups are divided by prop type . Props will NOT be allowed on the warm up. Props cannot be left laying stationary on the ice while the skater performs a maneuver.

Choice of One:

Hoop Wood or plastic (it must be rigid, non-bending material) with a permissible diameter of 2’7’’ to 2’ 11’’. The hoop can have colored tape or fabric to match the skater’s costume, but it cannot have any other decoration (i.e. fringe, etc.) on the hoop. Ball Rubber or plastic with a diameter of 7 ¾’’ Ribbon Ribbon made of satin or non-starched fabric, between 2’’ and 4’’ wide, with a minimum length of 2 yards

and a maximum length of 4 yards, attached to the end of a stick of between 20’’ and 30’’ in length, made out of wood,

plastic or fiberglass. The ribbon streamer must be one single streamer piece (not multiple streamers) according to the prop guidelines in the ISI Handbook.

If multiple ribbon streamers or fringe is used on the hoop, those programs should be entered into the Spotlight Light Entertainment category and not in the Rhythmic Skating events!

See chart in the ISI Handbook for time durations and limitations on maneuvers in Rhythmic Skating events.

Artistic Solo (Bronze - Platinum):

There are no required moves in an Artistic program. Emphasis should be placed on the creative and innovative design of a skating program. Strong edges, body positions, flow, music interpretation, rhythm, choreography and artistry should be the main focus of an Artistic program. There are no required moves and there is no technical score in this event. Refer to the Event Chart for durations and limitations on maneuvers for different test levels .

Maneuver Limitations/Event Level Revision

For Artistic, Interpretive, Solo Spotlight, Couples Spotlight and Rhythmic events, FS6-7/Gold level skaters can include any maneuvers in those programs – as allowed prior to the 2016 Rule Revisions.

As a result, competition directors will again have the option of grouping FS6-7/Gold skaters and FS8-10/Platinum skaters together in the same event groups for Artistic, Interpretive, Footwork, Solo Spotlight, Couples Spotlight and Rhythmic events. This should give these higher-level skaters a chance to have more competition within their event groups. Just because these levels can be combined, they don’t always have to be. The competition director should create event groups based on the entries received.

JUMP & SPIN TEAMS (sign up on the team entry form and list your partner’s name in the space provided)

This fun event is for teams of two (2) skaters. The teams can be made up of two friends in the same level

category, but not necessarily the same test level. Skater may skate above, but cannot skate below their Category Level.

Within each Category Level, a skater’s choice is not restricted by her/his Freestyle test level. If two skaters from different

category levels wish to compete together; the jump & spin team will be entered into the highest level of the 2 skaters. All participants must have passed any ISI test level.

Category Levels: Tots - Delta

Bronze Freestyle 1 - 3

Silver Freestyle 4 ‐ 5

Gold Freestyle 6 - 7

Platinum Freestyle 8 - 10

Required Maneuvers

One team of two (2) skaters enters the ice together and stops. The first skater begins and performs the same jump two (2)

times. After the second attempt, the first skater stops. The second skater then begins to perform the same spin two (2)

times. After the second attempt, the second skater stops.

The same Maneuver is performed 2 times, but only the best attempt is scored . The maneuvers are only judged for

technical accuracy – and not for the difficulty of the maneuver performed.

Low, Bronze, and Silver may be performed on ½ sheet of ice with skaters assigned to either zamboni end or west end. Full ice will be used for all Gold and Platinum Teams. Teams will have a warm-up.

Additional maneuvers and connecting steps are not permitted. Duration is not judged; however, team duration is one (1)

Music is required. Maneuvers must be performed in the order listed in the Test Standards.

Additional maneuvers from a higher level are not permitted in Team Compulsory events.

Skaters who have passed only Open Freestyle tests can only compete in the following Team Compulsory events:

Open Bronze – Team Compulsory 3 and higher

Open Silver – Team Compulsory 5 and higher

Open Gold – Team Compulsory 7 and higher

Open Platinum – Team Compulsory 8 and higher

Ensemble Team:

This event is open to groups of 3 – 7 skaters of all levels and ages. Skaters will be judged on the entertainment and performance value of the program. There are NO required maneuvers and no technical score, but skating maneuvers can be performed at any level. The group must use music, along with costumes and props, to enhance the theme of their program. Duration is 3 minutes all levels. The 30-second timing for teams to exit the ice has been removed and no penalty will be given. Ensemble skaters are not limited to the number of Ensemble entries in which they may participate: however if participating on more than one team skaters must be able to change costumes during one team’s performance so they are ready to perform again with the next team.

Family Spotlight:

Two or more family members can perform an entertaining spotlight routine using costumes and props. If necessary, the event groupings are divided first by the number of skaters and then by age groups and/or ability levels. Duration is 1 and ½ minutes.

Synchronized Skating:

Synchronized Formation Compulsories and Synchronized Skating Compulsories will now have General Overall criteria added for all judges.

In the Synchronized Formation Compulsories and Synchronized Skating Compulsories events, if a required element is repeated, the best performance (not necessarily the first performance) will be scored for the required element.

In Synchronized Skating events, lifts are permitted in the Teen Skating, Teen Dance, Collegiate Skating, and Collegiate Dance divisions only.

In Synchronized Open Skating events, lifts are permitted in the Teen and Collegiate divisions only.

There are no required maneuvers in the Synchronized Open Skating events, however, no skaters are permitted to perform double or triple jumps, acrobatic lifts, and backward arabesque/spiral intersections.

Production Team:

Production teams consist of 8-32 skaters and can be divided into Small (8-14), Medium (15-22), and Large (23-32) categories.

Props and costumes should be used to illustrate a creative and artistic program.

Any and all maneuvers are allowed.

Please see the current ISI Handbook for further information.

Duration is 4.5 minutes for all levels.
