How scoring works.
Figure skating is judged in two ways: judges rank skaters (6.0), or they score every element and the program as a whole (IJS and CJS). Each result on Rinkday is shown the way it was judged.
Placements and scores
- 6.0 results
- Judges rank the skaters instead of scoring them, so a 6.0 result is a placement and cannot be compared as a number.
- Majority
- In 6.0 judging each judge ranks the skaters. “3/1” means three judges placed this skater first, a majority of the panel.
- IJS
- The International Judging System scores every element and the program components, and the points add up to the total.
- CJS
- The judging system used at Compete USA events scores program components only, with no element scores, so its totals do not compare with IJS totals.
What makes up an IJS score
A segment score is the technical score plus the component score, minus any deductions.
- Technical score (TES)
- The points for every jump, spin and step sequence: each element’s base value plus its grade of execution.
- Base value
- What an element is worth before the judges grade how well it was done.
- Grade of execution (GOE)
- The judges’ quality grade for an element, from −5 to +5, added to or taken from its base value.
- Component score (PCS)
- The judges’ marks for the program as a whole, such as skating skills, composition and presentation, multiplied by a factor.
- Factor
- The multiplier a level and segment apply to each program component mark.
- Deductions
- Points taken off the segment score, for example for a fall or a time violation.
Call marks
The technical panel adds a mark to an element code when a jump was short of rotation or took off from the wrong edge.

| q | Quarter. The jump landed a quarter turn short. It keeps its full base value, and the judges reduce the grade of execution. |
| < | Under-rotated. The jump landed more than a quarter but less than half a turn short. Its base value is reduced. |
| << | Downgraded. The jump landed half a turn or more short. It is scored as the jump with one fewer rotation. |
| e | Wrong edge. A flip or Lutz took off from the wrong edge. Its base value is reduced. |
| ! | Unclear edge. A flip or Lutz took off from an edge the panel could not call clearly. The judges reduce the grade of execution. |
